A new documentary traces Mardi Gras beads to their beginning in China.

A factory in southern China couldn't seem farther away from the boozy streets of the French Quarter during Mardi Gras. But it's in China, in a shop where teenage girls work 11-hour days, that the baubles get their start.

Filmmaker David Redmond traced the beads from the Far East to the streets of New Orleans in his documentary, "Mardi Gras: Made in China." He interviews workers in China and partygoers in Louisiana.

In an asap podcast, CARA ANNA talks with Redmond about the making of the documentary and discusses some of the film's most powerful moments.
