Would a good cruise down your town's main street be nearly as satisfying without "Ridin' Dirty" blasting from car speakers? What about a shower without anything to sing in it?
Especially with iPods so ubiquitous, pop songs are the soundtracks to our lives.
So on the red carpet at Sunday night's Grammy Awards, we asked nominees and attendees about their personal soundtracks. Below are the songs they like to play ...
___
While DJing a wedding ...
Electronica nominee Paul Oakenfold: "It'd have to be Gnarls Barkley 'Crazy.' That song appeals to kids, old people, all kinds of people. It's just a massive song. I started out DJing at bars. I never really did a wedding."
___
While going to bed ...
Grammy-nominated rapper Lupe Fiasco: "Miles Davis' 'Kind of Blue,' the whole album. It's so mellow it just kind of lets you relax. It won't put you to sleep if you're not ready to sleep, but it will if you're going to bed. I have it on MP3."
___
For those intimate moments ...
Grammy-nominated country singer Dierks Bentley: "If you haven't picked up the new Alan Jackson record that Alison Krauss produced. That's a bottle of red wine, and get started with that, and if you make it to track 11, you're a better man than me. 'Don't Ask Why.' It just talks about when you're in love with someone and things are good, don't ask why. Just proceed."
___
While prepping to host my XM Radio show ...
Grammy-winning rapper Chamillionaire: "I like anything that Jay-Z does. Probably 'Show Me What You Got.' It gets me hyped up to go on the air."
___
While getting dressed for the Grammys ...
Not-so-nattily-dressed funk legend George Clinton: "'She's Leaving Home' by the Beatles. You know that one? (Sings) Friday morning at 5 o'clock and the day is through. She'll step into her evening dress."
___
While flying over "The Pond" ...
Grammy-nominated British singer KT Tunstall: "Carole King, 'You're So Far Away.' It's my tearing tune if I want to feel melancholy. Otherwise it'd have to be Jackson 5 'I Want You Back,' and that's referring to a cup of tea in my living room."
___
While leaving the office ...
Bluegrass singer and producer Ricky Skaggs: "There's a group on my label, Cherry Homes. They have a new song called 'Black and White.' It's about giving your life to God. God has the ability to bring you to where you need to be. Life is not black and white. The world pulls at us so much that it grays the white a lot."
___
To sing in the shower ...
Grateful Dead bass guitarist Phil Lesh: "'Magnolia Mountain' by Ryan Adams. It's the sound of the whole band and the band that came off the record. It's the totality of it. I'm a big fan of Ryan's and I like all of his songs, but I actually played on that one."
___
While cruising ...
Grammy-winning rapper-singer Krayzie Bone: "It'd have to be 'Ridin' Dirty.' That was such a huge song for us. We hear it from cars all the time. If I'm feeling old-school, I'll go with some Eazy-E, 'Boyz N The Hood.'"
