It was 50 years ago today: RAY KUGLER tracks down newsreel footage from the launch of the world's first artificial satellite on Oct. 4, 1957.
It's been exactly a half-century since the Soviet Union got a head start on the space race with the first launch of an artificial satellite.
As the anniversary of Sputnik 1 approached, asap dug up some newsreel footage that uses animation to explain the launch by the Soviets -- or, as the newsreel calls them, the "reds."
