It's the separation of work and play:
Just getting to work can be, well, work. Endless traffic jams, late buses, loud and crowded trains -- no one would confuse this with a vacation.
But talk with some people about their commutes, and they do describe it as a vacation. Or playing hookey. Or a chance to bond with nature.
These are the people who opt to ride their bikes to work. Ask them why they do it, and the response often is: "Why wouldn't I?"
This month is National Bike Month, and May 14-18 is National Bike to Work Week -- including Bike to Work Day on May 18. In an asap podcast, PAULA FROKE talks with some bike commuters about their motivations and gets tips on safer cycling and bike commute planning.
Then she tries it herself, and narrates the ride.
Later this Bike Month on asap: a video report on safer cycling.
